News & Notes

Lil Wayne
Could Lil Wayne release Tha Carter V this spring? Drake revealed the news during a New Orleans concert that was part of the NBA's All-Star weekend, saying Tha Carter V will be out on May 5. However, MTV News notes that an executive from Weezy's Cash Money label said in an interview just last week that the rapper didn't want to reveal the release date for his new record, because he wanted it to be a surprise for his fanbase.

Trey Songz's new album, Trigga, could be coming on June 30th reports Trey announced both the album's title and its release date last week during a Q&A session at New Era Academy in Baltimore where he was taking part in an event for the Get Schooled Foundation.  He told the audience that he is "having fun on the album" and that he’s "worked with a lot of great people." Album dates and projects have been known to shift but coming from artist mentions it’s a positive sign. Trigga will be Trey Songz's first album since his 2012 project Chapter V.

Kanye West is taking his Yeezus tour down under this spring, with five Australian shows set for May. Pusha T will open the arena shows in Perth (5/2), Adelaide (5/4), Melbourne (5/6), Brisbane (5/9) and Sydney (5/10).  In other Kanye news, he has released a remix of Beyoncé's "Drunk In Love," with a new verse by West himself. On Saturday, Beyoncé teased a new video via YouTube for the Kanye remix of "Drunk In Love."

Lil Kim revealed a baby bump on Wednesday night at New York's Fashion Week, where she wore a curve-hugging dress and confirmed that she's a few months pregnant with her first child. According to US Weekly, at some point in the night Kim hit the stage to perform her single "Lighters," and told the crowd, "I'm a mom, but I can turn it up a little!" "I'm still going to work," she added. "I'm still going to be hardcore. The baby has made me even more of a beast!"

Director John Singleton has signed on to rewrite, direct and produce the biopic about late rapper Tupac Shakur, according to Variety. Singleton directed Shakur in 1993's Poetic Justice. "Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with," the director commented. "His passing deeply affected my life as well as countless people in this world. His life story is as important to my generation." It is still unclear who will portray Tupac, but production on the movie is expected to start in June.

Public Enemy leader Chuck D has been tapped as the latest ambassador of Record Store Day 2014, which takes place on April 19. Speaking about his appointment, Chuck D stated: "The record store made musicians listen beyond themselves. It both complemented and supplemented the radio, in fact the best radio stations in the past followed the vibe of the record stores of their regions, thus growing and nurturing each other. The fans and listener had everything to gain, and if they wanted to get into making music, the Record Store turned into their first school and sonic passport out... In this age where industry has threaded the music sound with virtual sight and story I am honored to be called upon to be Record Store Day Ambassador of 2014. With the masses, neck bent into their smartphones, let all of us music lovers GPS our way into a reality that is the Record Store."
